Customers of SSE could be in for BIG refund due to faulty meters and incorrect clocks

Customers of SSE could be in line for a big refund as the energy company says it has potentially overcharged 16,000 customers through faulty metres and incorrect clocks.

Customers on the ‘Economy 10’ tariff who are supposed to be charged less for off-peak usage may have paid too much as the metres were incorrectly set, seeing that off-peak usage rates were actually billing for peak rates – at a whopping 74% more!

SSE, who will be refunding all affected customers, say it’s due to two things -  a manufacturing fault on a batch of metres, affecting around 8k customers; and a second problem whereby metres were set at the wrong time.

One customer from South Wales was refunded a huge £2,300 by Swalec, who are part of the SSE Group.

The problem was first highlighted by consumer watchdog group, Which?, back in February, who claimed that around 3.9m customers could be affected by incorrect clocks – over many energy providers  - due to the clock change in the Autumn and Spring.
