Government try own Group Buying Initiative

The Government is to implement its own Meercat style buying power.

This collective buying will enable them to enter into long term fixed price deals for Government and public sector purchases to secure cheaper gas and electricity, ultimately through renewable sources.

It’s part of the Government’s Energy for Growth Initiative.

The scheme will see the Government’s procurement arm, The Crown Commercial Service, secure savings as it pools together its usage. The Crown Commercial Service spends a whooping £1.6 billion on gas and electricity every year on behalf of the Government, which is 3% of the UK’s entire utility needs.

The electricity generator contracts will be for durations of 15 years, and will encourage investment into renewable energy projects; ultimately for the renewable energy to cover the provision.  For example, the first stage of the scheme has piloted the building of two 49MW energy-from-waste plants in Teesside.  This has resulted in the Government supporting a 20 year deal to purchase the generated electricity.

Francis Maude, Minister for the Cabinet Office, whilst on the construction site of the building of the second Teesside facility, said, “Before the last general election, government failed to leverage its huge buying potential to negotiate a good price and support the UK energy industry.    Energy for Growth ensures the security of our energy infrastructure – it’s good for the industry, good for taxpayers, and supports this government’s long term plan for a stronger economy.”
